Your Editorial, "The poor pay the price," is on the mark but it didn't go far enough.
Despite 9/11 and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, what's fueling the exploading budget deficit is President Bush's feckless tax cuts. But who cuts taxes during wartime?
During World War II my parents and grandparents rationed everything from food to fuel. Here we are fighting not one but two wars, and the only "sacrifice" the president has asked of us is to accept his tax cuts - which the country can not afford - and to "go shopping" (for gas guzzling, tax deductible SUV's no less).
What's wrong with this picture?
It's obscene to celebrate tax cuts and have the nerve to call for more while our brave soliders are risking their lives and limbs overseas.
Mr. Bush can show exactly what presidential leadership is all about by repealing his tax cuts, not only so the privileged can share in the sacrifice, but to keep the costs of these wars from being put on our children and grandchildrens credit card.
Then again, a moral president would have had enough sense to do that a long time ago.
